This is the Biscuiteers easy vanilla biscuit recipe we use for our biscuits in the Biscuiteers bakery everyday! We also use this as a base to create our chocolate biscuit recipe and all-spice. If you can't find vanilla bean paste, then you can use vanilla extract.

How to make the biscuits:
1. Sift the flours together into a mixing bowl, add the sugar and mix well.
2. Add the butter. Using just the tips of your fingers, rub the ingredients together until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
3. When all the butter is evenly mixed in, make a well in the centre and add the syrup, vanilla and the egg.
4. Mix well, drawing in any of the flour left at the side of the bowl, and stop as soon as a ball has formed.
6. Bake in the oven for 15-25 minutes depending on the size of your biscuits at 170°C, or until golden brown.
Other easy biscuit recipes: variations on a theme
If you are making dough for biscuits that are to be rolled, cut and iced, then you don't want to add massive chunks of chocolate or hazelnut or whatever it is you have in mind, as they make the process quite tricky. So cut, break or crunch up your ingredients into very small pieces before you use them. Add all the dry ingredients to the flour and sugar and any liquid ingredients mixed in the egg.
Nutmeg: add 1/2 tablespoon of grated nutmeg.
Ginger: add 1 tablespoon of ground ginger, and some finely crystallised ginger if you like.
Lemon: add the grated zest of two lemons.
Orange: add the grated zest of two oranges and little orange-flavoured chocolate chips.
Cinnamon and orange: add the grated zest of two oranges and 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon.
Coffee: add 3 tablespoons of instant coffee dissolved in 1 tablespoon of water.
Cardamom: crush 8 dried cardamom pods and add the little dried seeds from inside the husks.
