We spotted this chocolate cake recipe in Kate Doran’s new book, Homemade Memories, and think it’s the perfect children’s chocolate cake recipe for a birthday party! Of course, we’ve given it a special Biscuiteers twist- oh and his name is ‘Crumbs’! The classic caterpillar chocolate cake is something that has been a part of many birthdays at the Biscuiteers HQ and is a brilliant cake design for both grown-ups and kids.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 4, grease and line your 20cm x 30cm Swiss roll tin with baking paper.
Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk 5 eggs for 1-2 minutes. Add the sugar and continue to mix until the mixture becomes pale and thick. Carefully sift in the flour and cocoa, then fold together adding in the vanilla extract.
Step 3: Bake for 12-15 minutes, you’ll know the cake is ready because when a skewer or fork is inserted, it’ll come out clean! Set your cake aside to completely cool.
Create the filling:
You could use a shop bought spread like Nutella, or you can make the cake extra special by combining the chocolate spread with 200ml of double cream and whip until light but firm peaks form.
Rolling the cake:
Step 1: Lay a large piece of cling film down onto your work surface, this should be larger than your cake, dust with icing sugar and place your cake on top. Spread your cream or Nutella spread all over the cake in an even layer, however make sure you leave a margin of around 2cm all the way round.
Step 2: Using the cling film roll up the cake as tightly as you can then place in the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Whilst the cake is in the freezer, make your chocolate coating.
Step 3: Melt the chocolate with the butter and stir until the mixture is completely smooth. Carefully spoon the melted chocolate over the cake and make sure that the whole cake is completed coated.
Time to decorate:
Wait a little while for the coating to set and the use some of the remaining chocolate or line icing to add on your happy birthday cake decoration. We've created sweet little stars, but you could make our home-made iced gem biscuits or go to town with some Smarties! Then it is the final finishing touch - the biscuit feet and face. To make these, all you’ll need to do is use our easy vanilla biscuit recipe and use a knife to cut the dough into the shape of the feet and face, then decorate using flood and line icing!
