This September, we’re celebrating our Sweet 16th Birthday and what a sweet 16 years it's been! Each and every year has been marked with many milestones, from the day we iced our very first biscuit in 2007, to the 8.5 million we’ve iced in the last 5 years.
Even with all that growth and change, each of our biscuits are still baked and hand-iced with the exact same principles in mind, by artists right here at the Ministry of Biscuits in London.
To mark our birthday, and as we look ahead to the next 16 years of spreading biscuit magic, we thought we’d share some of our most magical memories so far…
1. Launched Biscuiteers in 2007
Our founder and chief Biscuiteer, Harriet Hastings, launched Biscuiteers in 2007, with the vision of introducing a completely new way of gifting. Inspired by the fashion world, we set out creating unique, stylish gifts for each season and every occasion.
Straight away, the media were taken with the idea of hand-iced artisan biscuits and suddenly we had orders, and a lot of them! We moved out of the catering kitchens where we refined our biscuit recipe and into our first proper bakery in November 2007.
2. Stocked in Selfridges Food Hall
Within three months of launching Biscuiteers we partnered with the prestigious Selfridges Food Hall, where our biscuits are still stocked today. Over the years we’ve installed a whole host of biscuit big builds into our famous display, from the London skyline, to Buckingham Palace, winter wonderland scenes and many more.
We’ve worked with a number of fabulous wholesale partners since then, including Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty, Hamleys and The Savoy.
3. Released The Biscuiteers Book of Iced Biscuits
In 2010, we put pen to paper and released our first book, the Biscuiteers Book of Iced Biscuits. Jam-packed with plenty of icing tutorials, baking tips and recipes, it was such a big hit we released a second edition in 2012!
4. Launched our Great Ormond Street Collection
In 2010 we launched our dedicated GOSH collection, which features a variety of gifts inspired by the names of the wards at the prestigious hospital. We’re proud to have partnered with Great Ormond Street for the last 13 years, raising over £130,000 in funds for the charity.
5. Opened our first store, in Notting Hill, in 2012.
2012 saw us bring our biscuit creations to the bustling streets of London. We opened our very first Icing Cafe in Notting Hill, which is famous for its illustrated façade and has become something of an Instagram sensation. We’ve since opened our flagship Biscuiteers Boutique in Belgravia, Eccleston Yards in 2021.
6. Launched our very first collaborative collection with Mr Men
In 2014 we paired up with our first biscuit partner, Mr Men! We created a collection of hand-iced characters inspired by the much loved Harper Collins series.
The collection was an instant hit and started a long tradition of collaborating with brilliant British brands to create exciting biscuit collections. You can still shop our Mr Men collection today, along with all of our other fabulous collaborative collections with Beatrix Potter, Paddington, Smiley and most recently, the Natural History Museum (more on that later!).
7. Collaborated with the National Portrait Gallery
In the autumn of 2015 the National Portrait Gallery approached us with a very exciting project. As part of their ‘Vogue: A Century of Style’ exhibition, they asked us to collaborate on an exclusive collection celebrating 100 years of Vogue.
Our icing artists created a collection of biscuit front covers inspired by some of the magazine's most iconic editions, as well as icing some timeless pieces of British fashion made famous by Vogue. The collection was available to purchase at the gallery's gift shop.
8. Released our second book, The Biscuiteers Book of Iced Gifts
2017 saw the publication of our second book, the Biscuiteers Book of Iced Gifts. Brimming with our most famous designs, along with exclusive creations you won’t have seen before, the book follows a whole year of special occasions and features 60 creative projects for every gifting moment.
9. We moved into the Ministry of Biscuits in 2019
In the summer of 2019 we moved into the ‘Ministry of Biscuits’, our new Biscuit HQ. The move brought together our Grand Icing Hall, Department of Dough, Biscuit Post Office and Biscuit Happiness department all under one roof in Colliers Wood, London.
10. Won the ‘Best E-commerce in lockdown’ in 2020
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, 2020 was a big year for Biscuiteers. We iced over 2.5 million biscuits and delivered them to people all over the world. To top things off, we were delighted to win the ‘Best E-commerce in lockdown’ at the 2020 E-commerce awards!
11. Two more awards won in 2021!
One year later, we were thrilled to win even more awards, winning Best Food & Drink at the UK E-commerce awards and Online Business of the Year at the Growing Business Awards in 2021.
12. Partnered with The Royal Collection in 2022
Here at the Ministry of Biscuits, we love a good royal occasion, from royal Weddings, to royal babies and of course the Jubilee. For the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 we had the pleasure of partnering with The Royal Collection to create an official Platinum Jubilee Biscuit tin that well and truly had the royal seal of approval.
Featuring hand-iced symbols from Queen Elizabeth II's 70 year reign and perfectly presented in a gold embossed tin, the collection went down a storm with our customers with nearly 4000 biscuit tins bought online.
13. Created not one, but two Harry Potter biscuit collections
In 2022 we sprinkled some biscuit magic on the wizarding world of Harry Potter when we launched not one, but two Harry Potter biscuit collections. Our icing experts worked their magic to ice over 112,000 Harry Potter Biscuits as part of one of the biggest branded partnerships in Warner Bros history.
Our Biscuits for Business team also worked to create an enchanting collection of hand-iced characters and symbols from the franchise for the Warner Bros Studio tour in London.
14. Iced over 20k biscuits for The Fabulous World of Dior
We're proud to have iced over 20,000 biscuits as part of the The Fabulous World of Dior experience that popped up in Harrods in 2022 at Christmas. We were on the menu at Le Cafe Dior and provided bespoke branded biscuit tins, which featured iconic hand-iced Dior motifs. The project began all the way back in July 2022 and involved just over 1,600 hours of skilled icing!
15. Launched our very first TV ad, Christmas 2022
It was a big festive season for us in 2022, we took our first venture into the wonderful world of television with our Nutcracker inspired Christmas advert. A real showcase of the creativity and talent of our in-house team, the advert featured our Head Icer, Lucy perfectly icing our Nutcracker biscuits, a beautiful set designed and constructed by our Product Development Manager, Lettie and was directed by our Creative Content Manager, Shabira!
16. Launched our Biscuiteers x Natural History Museum collection
This summer, we had an exciting new collaboration. We partnered with the Natural History Museum to bring to life in biscuit form, a collection of hand-iced marvels of the museum.
The biscuits in the collection are inspired by the prehistoric and present day, and resemble icons from the museum like Hope Blue Whale and Dippy Dinosaur. The collection is available online and in the Natural History Museum gift shop!
And there you have it! Some of our sweetest moments from the last 16 years of Biscuiteers, we can't wait to add to this list as the years progress. As always, thank you to everyone who has supported us, we wouldn’t have made so many magical memories without you - here’s to the next 16 years!
