We get a lot of questions about how we ice our biscuits, and we like to think we have a lot of experience when it comes to icing. So we've created part two to our flood icing techniques blog post, inspired by what our lovely blog readers would like to see and learn from us next. Top tip! Consistency is really important when icing your biscuits so be sure to use our royal line and flood icing recipes.
To start you'll need to create a batch of dough using our easy vanilla biscuit recipe. Once you've let them fully cool down, ice a wall of line icing around the edge of your biscuit, this will stop the flood icing from running down the sides and will create a neat effect once the biscuits are dry. ![]()
Feathering: To start, fill your biscuit with your base colour, we’ve used a light blue flood icing. Whilst the flood icing is still wet and using 2-3 different colours, ice straight lines diagonally across the biscuit. Next, take a cocktail stick and lightly drag it through the icing in the opposite direction to the icing lines. This is called feathering. It’s important to do this whilst the icing is still wet so it ‘sinks’ in and you achieve a smooth surface when dry. ![]()
Flowers: Select a base colour (we’ve gone for a light green) and fill the biscuit with flood icing. Whilst still wet, use a secondary flood icing colour to draw dots evenly spaced across the biscuit. Using a third colour, dot around the centre of the flower five times to create petals. We’ve finished off the design with white polka dots. ![]()

Spiders web: To create this spooky design you'll need 3 colours. Start by filling in your biscuit with your base colour, we've used white. Pick two additional colours and draw four circles with the first colour and do the same again with the second colour directly after. To create the spiders web design use a cocktail stick to lightly drag down through the icing to create the effect. Once again, It’s important to do this whilst the icing is still wet so it ‘sinks’ in and you achieve a smooth surface when dry. ![]()
