  • For the five layer chocolate cake:
  • 400g caster sugar
  • 225g plain flour
  • 65g cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs – whisked
  • 200ml milk
  • 100ml vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 200ml boiling water
  • For the vanilla buttercream:
  • 150g unsalted butter – at room temperature
  • 300g sifted icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Brown food colouring

Top tip:

Use a pallet knife that you have run under warm water to smooth the buttercream. The warm knife will you give you an extra smooth and professional finish!
